Ubuntu is an old Bantu word/concept, meaning, roughly, "I am because you are." The idea, as I understand it, is that we are not only responsible for one another, but that our very being, our spiritual evolution, is rooted in an inter-dependency that permeates all culture, intertwines all souls.
lyrics
They say there’ll be no peace, no resolution
no avoiding destruction
no chance for release
The chains that bind our hearts were forged
by other hands, from ancient lands
But now it’s time to speak
ubuntu, ubuntu, ubuntu
For all too many years,
the rivers have flowed with blood
plowshares are still outnumbered
by all these swords
The widow and the stranger still want for food
the orphan is twice removed from love restored
ubuntu, ubuntu, ubuntu
and if there is a way to end this hate
it will only be discovered by hearts that ache
for the peace that only people who love can make
ubuntu, ubuntu, ubuntu
I am because you are,
no matter what others say
this is more than an old cliché
we use when stronger words fail
I am because you are,
let the separatist be forewarned
we share in common a sacred form
leaving all else to pale
